Summary v. Analysis

I have decided to write a brief summary v. analysis
based on a the 5 Minute youtube video Hand in Hand                                                            http://youtu.be/UTrb6i7gJAk
                                   PLEASE ENJOY THE PERFORMANCE

A SUMMARY states the facts; AN ANALYSIS interprets the experience.

Summary: In this ballet entitled Hand to Hand a one legged dancer performs with a one armed ballerina. He supporting her and she him in a technically accurate and very well choreographed performance. A summary could go on to state many other facts about the subject but that is all you would get, just the facts.

Analysis: In their performance, Hand in Hand, the artists demonstrate an indomitable spirit. Their artistry showing that the desire of the soul can and will prevail, regardless of the pain that must be endured, in finding a vehicle for expression and connection. An Analysis would continue by describing areas of the performance that express desire, pain, connection and more.

Jordan, Thank you for the memories.

Jordan's post brought back a memory for me.  I have some books that I read every year.  My longest standing tradition, Kahilil Gibran's "TheProphet".

It was given to me when I was a young teen, I looked at it briefly and I set it on a shelf. I hated reading in school and didn't really enjoy reading until I was about 35 but I did read on rare occasion when I was younger. On one of those occasions, a planned "Lazy Day" when I was 17 I got up, made breakfast and went back to bed with my tray and a pile of books, pencils and paper grabbed off that shelf.  It was a slim book with under 100 pages, I decided to give it a go.  A few hours later I had finished the book and was profoundly affect, I was also very surprised by that.

The book had been there for years, how could something I had laying around for years touch me so deeply now when it didn't even interest me when I had gotten it.  That was 32 years ago, I am profoundly affected every time I read that book and because of that book I have looked for and found others that have become a part of my evolving life.

I'm Reading, really, I AM...my eyes are moving!

In his book Good Readers and Good Writers, Valdimir Nabokov states that "...the good reader is one who has imagination, memory, a dictionary, and some artistic sense..."  (615)  and a good reader is a "rereader" who develops a sense of the written word over subsequent readings that allow the mind to fully image the constructs created through the written word.  I do tend to agree with this vision of what a good reader is as understanding is a conceptual practice.

Though I agree with Nabokov I also disagree and find him to be very judgmental when it comes to the acceptance of others and their practice of reading when he feels they do not live up to his vision of what a good reader should be. He expresses outright disdain for those he refers to as being of the "lowly variety" (616) of reader.  I believe that a good reader is also one who knows why they are reading and one who is deriving true satisfaction from the activity of reading.  Nabokov gives the distinct impression that he does not really care about the reader unless the reader is meeting his expectations.  This would lead me to question his motivation in any writing he produces.

By my definition as well as Nabokov's I consider myself to be a good reader; I also know a have a tendency to be a lazy reader and when the latter is the case I am a very active "rereader".
